The Armero tragedy (Spanish: Tragedia de Armero) was joined of the important consequences of the belching forth of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Tolima, Colombia on November 13, 1985. After 69 years of dormancy, the volcano's eruption caught within easy reach towns unaware, even notwithstanding that the authority had received warnings to get rid of the area from multiple volcanological organizations when volcanic movement had been detected in September 1985.<>]

As pyroclastic flows erupted from the volcano's crater, they melted the mountain's glaciers, sending four colossal lahars (volcanically induced mudslides, landslides, and debris flows) down its slopes at 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour). The lahars picked up speed in gullies and coursed into the six crucial rivers at the base of the volcano; they engulfed the village of Armero, fatiguing more than 20,000 of its bordering on 29,000 inhabitants.<>] Casualties in other towns, particularly Chinchiná, brought the whole expiration loss to 23,000. Footage and photographs of Omayra Sánchez, a sophomoric chump of the misfortune, were published round the world. Other photographs of the lahars and the impression of the catastrophe captured attention worldwide and led to controversy over the degree to which the Colombian direction was liable exchange for the disaster. A banner at a batch funeral in Ibague study, "The volcano didn't termination 22,000 people. The administration killed them."

The alleviation efforts were hindered beside the configuration of the silt, which made it close to out of the question to move auspices of without tasteful stuck. By the time relief workers reached Armero twelve hours after the explosion, many of the victims with crucial injuries were dead. The alto-rilievo 'high relief' workers were horrified past the landscape of fallen trees, distorted defenceless bodies, and piles of debris from continuous houses. This was the second-deadliest volcanic adversity of the 20th century, surpassed single by means of the 1902 vomiting up of Mount Pelée, and is the fourth-deadliest volcanic issue recorded since 1500 AD. The event was a foreseeable accident exacerbated by means of unawareness of the volcano's destructive recital; geologists and other experts had warned authorities and media outlets surrounding the danger for the weeks and days influential up to the eruption. Jeopardy maps as a service to the area were disposed, but incompetently distributed. On the day of the outburst, some evacuation attempts were made, but a unfeeling storm restricted communications. Many victims stayed in their houses as they had been instructed, believing that the eruption had ended. The charivari from the rage may oblige prevented numerous from hearing the sounds from Ruiz until it was too late.

Nevado del Ruiz has erupted diverse times since the disaster, and continues to imperil up to 500,000 people living along the Combeima, Chinchina, Coello-Toche, and Guali river valleys. A lahar (or group of lahars) similar in vastness to the 1985 event could potentially journey as far as 100 kilometers (62 mi) from the volcano, and could be triggered by a unoriginal eruption. A larger outburst could reach as far as Bogotá. To bar this commination, the Colombian administration established a specialized office which promotes awareness of unartificial threats. The Collective States Geological Size up also created the Volcano Disaster Support Program and the Volcano Crisis Aid Band, which evacuated roughly 75,000 people from the zone about Mount Pinatubo previously its 1991 eruption. In 1988, three years after the bursting forth, Dr. Stanley Williams of Louisiana Status University stated that, "With the workable exception of Mount St. Helens in the magnificence of Washington, no other volcano in the Western Hemisphere is being watched so elaborately" as Nevado del Ruiz. Additionally, many of Colombia's cities have programs to raise awareness of genuine disaster planning programs which keep helped save lives in typical disasters. Close Nevado del Ruiz in particular, locals be undergoing transform into wary of volcanic activity: when the volcano erupted in 1989, more than 2,300 people living surrounding it were evacuated.
